Spring Trends in Design 2011

This last Saturday was beautiful in my neck of the woods.  I spent all day outside enjoying the weather and the new flowers and foliage.  This time of year always energizes me.  I’m not alone since my phone has started ringing off the hook with new clients wanting to start their own projects.  I thought I would take a moment to share the majors trends for spring 2011. I hope hearing what’s hot in the design world helps you see possibilities for your own spaces.

PINK!

I am sure you have noticed that it is everywhere- fashion, home, tabletop, parties, media-everywhere.  Pantone named Honeysuckle color of the year and it seems that they were right- we are tired of the worry and stress in our lives are breaking out.  Now before all of you shout at me that your men won’t let you paint a room pink, take a look at House Beautiful’s issue this month.  The rooms are sophisticated, sexy, relaxed, whimsical and while still being grownup and wonderful.

Great pinks exist!  Pinks across all ranges from pale and grey-ed out to corals, salmon, and plum.  There are so many ways to make this trend your own.   You can add some of the fun accents that are out in stores, make it the highlight of your next dinner party or paint a smaller space like a powder room.  Embrace this trend if you dare, the energy is infectious and the possibilities are endless!

Metallic!

Despite what you might have been told all your life, you can now boldly mix gold and silver.  This trend was made popular by Kelly Wearstler, an LA designer.  This is especially wonderful for dinner parties and groups of accessories in places likes mantels and sofa or hall tables.  It layers well with organic element and beach items too.  Use a variety of shapes and heights to really make this look work.

Botanicals/ Garden and Organic!

Both of these play with the green/eco themes we have been in love with for a while.  They embrace nature and invite it indoors relaxing and restoring us.  This spring most of the big box home stores have new lines with these themes featured heavily.  They feel fresh and relaxing at the same time and work with most design styles.  Update your existing pieces with these elements for a low risk, big impact change.

Go Global!

Anything from anywhere is the theme here.  This encompasses big tribal prints, animal prints, Ikat block prints, and interesting color combinations from other lands.  Try using whimsical accessories and unique objects not common in the US, by adding these elements you add depth and interest to your space.  When I use them, they often remind my clients of cherished memories, great trips, and spark conversations with their guests.

The 80‘s!

Many of you many have noticed that the 80‘s have been creeping into fashion for a few years now and more recently into hair styles again (have you seen how many stars are embracing big, thick bangs?).  Add 80‘s fun to your interiors by using big, bold color and patterns, mismatched items, metallics, and odd pairings of different styles and scales.  This is a fresh version that doesn’t seem so cliche so go ahead and dabble a little here.

Bohemian!

Traditionally, this style is derived from the Gypsies; exotic nomads with a culture all their own.  Nowadays this is a blending of The 80’s and Global but deserves a category of it’s own.  The idea is the well traveled, individual that doesn’t care if everything matches- the flower child that has grown up so to speak.  If you have those items that haven’t seemed right in the past and are hiding in a closet, bring them out and embrace them.

I hope this inspires you to look at your home with new eyes and think about the possibilities for spring and beyond.  There are so many wonderful new ways to express your own personal style so go ahead and experiment.  Haven Interior Design is always here to help you interpret a hot trend and create your own personal haven.
