“Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple—one that draws you in with its beguiling charm. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.”

Purple has a long history with our society which makes it an interesting psychological choice for Pantone. According to color surveys and research, purple is commonly associated with creative fields and is often a favorite color for children, although one of adult’s least favorite. Until recently, that is. I actually thought purple would be the choice for 2013, since I saw it everywhere in Spain when I traveled there two years ago. It’s a tremendously “fun” color and the selection signals our shift culturally from our conservative past to creativity and originality, highlighting our current culture of expressing individuality and standing out in a crowd.

Purple adds an element of mysticism and spiritual presence that is also popular now. According to Leatrice Eisman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute,

“Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination. It encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”

While this color can make you feel excited, energized, intrigued and full of life, it may be a tough sell in interior design. I think it will be more embraced in fashion and beauty, which we are already seeing. How will you see Radiant Orchid, or any shade of purple, being used in decorating? A natural use will be in a young girls room, a feminine purple could take over the current first color choice of turquoise. Spruce up your interiors by adding this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories.

For example, add throw pillows, vases or table wear in spring and summer in a purple tone to incorporate this dynamic color. Many shades of purple pair beautifully with neutral interiors and look sophisticated with grey and dark brown.

Traditional interiors could be interesting anding purple to olive or hunter green. Orchid has been paired with navy to bring in the stability of blue and natural elements, it can be more “livable” and stay in style longer. Uplifting and bold without being overpowering, Radiant Orchid reenergizes almost any color palette and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces.
